Anoushka Maskey, a singer-songwriter hailing from Sikkim and now based in Mumbai, has made significant strides in the Indian independent music scene since her debut in 2020. Her journey began with the release of two EPs, "Things I Saw in a Dream" and "C.E.A.S.E.," both of which showcased her "lyrics-first" approach, blending folk-inspired melodies with introspective storytelling.
In "Things I Saw in a Dream," Maskey explores the themes of human connection and the intricacies of everyday life, echoing her experiences in the lockdown situation. The next EP, "C.E.A.S.E.," is an introspective work on environmental issues, depicting a protagonist struggling with humanity's effects on the Earth. These were all recorded from her home studio, reflecting her dedication to true and genuine music production.
Working with producer Pranay Bakshi, aka Cosmic Grooves, Maskey has been experimenting with other genres of music. Their collaboration resulted in "The Search for Wild Geese," a bossa nova-styled song dealing with the complexities of friendship and self-discovery. This cooperation highlights her openness to experimentation across genres.
Live performances by Maskey have cemented her identity in the musical world even further. She toured with Prateek Kuhad in 2021 on his winter tour, reaching an even larger audience. Her performances at events like the Udaipur World Music Festival in December 2022 are proof of how much more her profile has risen in the live music scene. Also, her own-organized "Sunny Side Down Tour'24" was a milestone one, with the first full live band configuration and new arrangements that cut across jazz-pop, bossa nova, indie rock, and dream pop genres.
In January 2024, Maskey dropped the single "Most of the Days," a folk ballad that came out of a time of introspection personally. The song is an homage to her early heroes, such as Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, and marks a return to musical beginnings. The song is a prime example of how she can take personal life and turn it into art that everyone can relate to.
Throughout her professional life, Maskey has openly discussed the realities of staying healthy mentally while being in the music business. She stresses the necessity of keeping one's expectations under control and of enjoying the art-making process itself instead of getting bogged down by the pressures from others. This viewpoint has not just influenced her artistic work but has also struck a chord with numerous listeners.
While she continues to grow as an artist, Anoushka Maskey remains committed to creating music that is a reflection of herself and her artistic development. Her dedication to staying true to herself and experimenting with various musical terrains makes her a riveting voice in modern Indian music.
