The all-volunteer string band, Aqua Strings Band, is very dear to the hearts of music lovers for special reasons, mainly because of its immense participation in the annual famous Mummers Parade in Philadelphia. This very authentic and colorful group has been one of the city's festive traits, enjoyed by one and all through its orchestral finesse and charismatic display.
Founded on April 2, 1920, by Elmer W. Leyrer and Fred J. Kesel Sr., the band became a formally organized part of the String Band Association in 1945. Aqua Strings Band's rich heritage of devotion to music has rendered this community organization very special for residents as well as tourists alike. An identifiable element of their style is the addition of the glockenspiel, an instrument Fred J. Kesel introduced to the group. The glockenspiel's unique tones have since become a signature element of the band, setting them apart from others in the string band tradition.
The band's performances are characterized by their lively energy, skillful arrangements, and a remarkable ability to blend traditional string music with a variety of influences, ensuring that each show is a unique experience.
