Arundhati Roy is a prominent Indian novelist, activist, and public intellectual, her best-known work being the Booker Prize-winning novel The God of Small Things (1997), which has amassed global fame. Roy was born on November 24, 1961, in Shillong, Meghalaya, but grew up in Kerala, where her worldview was molded in her formative years by a Syrian Christian mother and a Bengali father.

Her debut novel, The God of Small Things, became a global sensation and winner of the Booker Prize in 1997. The novel is semi-autobiographical, set in the author's native Kerala, and deals with such issues as caste, forbidden love, and social discrimination, as seen through the eyes of twin siblings Rahel and Estha. The lyrical prose of the book, the non-linear narrative, and the ability to touch the reader emotionally have all made it one of the most celebrated books in modern Indian literature.
Roy's second novel—finally published in 2017—after a lapse of twenty years—The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, which brings together a multitude of narratives about political turmoil, human rights, and the marginalized communities of India.
