Bhaswati Chakraborty is a renowned Hindustani classical singer for her work in Indian classical and light classical music. Born on August 1, 1973, in Malda, West Bengal, she was brought up in a family that cherished education and arts. Her father, Amalendu Chatterjee, was a school teacher, and her mother, Rekha Chatterjee, nurtured her musical interest since childhood.
The education of Bhaswati started at Shahpur High School in Malda and further progressed at Malda Women's College. She then went on to get specialized honors in music at Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata, enhancing her theoretical knowledge in classical music. She received her primary training from Guru Mahendra Prasad and subsequent higher training in Hindustani classical music at the hands of Pandit Alok Chattopadhyay belonging to the Kirana Gharana. She further learned light classical music from late Vidushi Purnima Choudhury.
Throughout her career, Bhaswati has received several accolades, including the HMV Golden Talent Award in 1993 for her excellence in Hindustani classical and light classical music. She was also honored by the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, for her contributions to Indian classical music. She is a permanent member of the Regional Selection Committee for vocal classical and light classical music at the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training, an organization of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Bhaswati has performed in India's finest auditoriums, such as Sangeet Bihan, Bihar; Rajbhawan, Patna; Magadh Mahila College; Shantiniketan, West Bengal; and Rourkela's Civic Centre, Odisha. She is also a regular teacher, having taught for more than eight years, and currently works as a vocal music instructor at The Tribhuvan School, Patna.
She continues to be committed to the preservation and promotion of Hindustani classical music, connecting with people through social media and live concerts. Her love for music continues to motivate the younger generation of musicians.
