Bickram Ghosh is one of India's most celebrated tabla players and iconic figures in the world music realm. Born on 20 October 1966, in Kolkata, he is the son of Pandit Shankar Ghosh, legendary tabla maestro, and vocalist Sanjukta Ghosh. Bickram trained rigorously in tabla under his father and later absorbed the nuances of Carnatic rhythm from Pandit S. Sekhar.
Bickram Ghosh is versatile in his presentation of Indian classical, fusion, and film music. His tabla presentations are intricate with rhythm and emotive expression. He has received accolades at various international platforms. He accompanied Pandit Ravi Shankar on a worldwide tour and was instrumental in many of the maestro's international performances and recordings.
Besides the classical, Bickram has also found an area in experimental genres, integrating Indian rhythms with global sounds. His band, Rhythmscape, is a pioneering effort at fusion music that brings modern sounds to traditional tablas.
Bickram is also a notable composer in Indian cinema, having composed music for films like *Jal*, which was nominated for an Oscar, and *Panchlait*. His work with musical collaborator Sonu Nigam on the film *Jal* received critical acclaim.
A multi-talented artist, Ghosh was a Padma Shri awardee in 2012 and has received many accolades for his contribution to Indian music. He continues to explore boundaries, guiding new talent and presenting the tabla to the international world. Bickram's love for music has been transcending genres and makes him an important cultural ambassador for Indian rhythm.
