Bihari Lal, popularly known as Bihari, was one of the finest poets in the 17th century. He has been credited with some really beautiful pieces of Hindi poetry. Hailing from Bihar, he became a popular figure in the Indian literary world, especially in "satasai" or hundred and seven couplets. His most famous piece, "Satasai," was written during his stay in Jaipur. He had been invited to Jaipur by Raja Jai Singh I of Amber.
Bihari's poems are rich in emotional depth and mastery over language. He used themes of love, devotion, and nature with an ear for the fertile cultural and spiritual traditions that prevailed at his time. His poetry is known for its skillfully woven lyrical quality and philosophical insight, which still gives readers a sense of resonance even today.
The royal patronage by Raja Jai Singh I gave Bihari the creative freedom to explore his artistic talents. The vibrant cultural environment of Jaipur further enriched his work, leading to the creation of "Satasai," which remains a cornerstone of Hindi literature. This collection comprises eloquent couplets that reflect the nuances of human emotions, showing Bihari's keen observation of life and love.
