Aditi Veena, or as she is better known professionally, Ditty, is an Indian singer-songwriter and urban ecologist who merges her music with a strong affinity for environmental causes. Born in New Delhi, she spent most of her early life in nature; her mother being a botanist had a profound influence on her own love of nature. This was to become a theme in her music and overall life's work.
She pursued architecture at the School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi, where she grew more sensitive to the effect that urban development had on the environment. Disappointed with being removed from the conventional architectural practices that tended to ignore ecological balance, she moved towards urban ecology and sustainable living. This change was the start of her quest to integrate her creative expression with environmental issues.
Her experience in Sri Lanka was life-changing, driving her to create her first album, "Poetry Ceylon," which she released in 2019. The album is a moving expression of love for nature, as tracks such as "Eulogy for a Sparrow" mourn the devastation of the planet and "On an Island" document her personal journey towards becoming ecologically conscious. Her sound, soft and contemplative, has a clear message of coexistence with the natural world and encourages listeners to adopt sustainability themselves.
Ditty went a step ahead with her allegiance to environmental causes by organizing a "Make Forests Not War" tour, India's very first carbon-neutral music tour. By train journey, performing on open grounds, and collaborating with local communities in planting native food forests, she used her music as a very real agent for change. With this, art and activism joined forces to spark concrete action on the planet.
With her original blend of music and ecological awareness, Ditty keeps inspiring an eco-friendlier tomorrow by utilizing her voice not just to sing but also to voice out the voiceless nature. Feel free to dig deeper into her activism or music.
