Gulabo Sapera the dancing queen of rajasthan is a name to reckon with. Born and brought up in traditional family of Snake Charmers a nomadic tribe, GULABO alias GULABI SAPERA has taken the traditional folk dance “kalbelia” to new height and established the rich i.e. the dance of Snake Charmers and GULABO are synonymous, all thanks to the hard work and honest efforts put in by GULABO. Born in Kotda a small village in Ajmer district of Rajasthan, Gulabo, the seventh offspring of illiterate nomadic parentswas burried within an hour of her birth as per the family tradition for a number of girl. She was save on the insistence of a rebellious maternal aunt and started growing up in the company of snake. She kept on polishing and refining her art while dancing and moving from one place to the other, waiting for an apportunity which was provided by Rajasthan Tourism Development corporation. After being invited to perform at the Pushkar Fair in 1980 she never looked back. Gulabo, a humble and down to earth village girl of Rajasthan has given a completely new identity to the folkore of Rajasthan and has opened new vistas for the long ignored folk artists of this clourful state while axploring new avenues and horizons for her self. She is indeed the most shining star of today’s time. Born as a girl child GULABO lived a life of struggle and toil from the beginning. After seeing the conditions if girls life for empowerment of women for which she has to fight the odds every now and then. As the girl were not allowed to dance and perform on stage, her family to face social boycott. They had to endure sarcasm and struggle determintion, Gulabo continued working for her cause. She has been conferred with many prestigious honours and awards including the President Award, Sangeet Natak Akadami Award, Women of the year 2008 (Times music Award), Rana America Award, Ambedkar Award , Rajasthan Gaurav Award, Gujrat Gaurav Award, Gunijan Award etc. Gulabi Sapera is one of the eminent personalities of Rajasthan who has dedicated her entire exitence for the women of Rajsathan making her the most approprite nominee for the “BHASKAR WOMEN OF THE YEAR” 2010.
