The in-your-face independent spirit of Hari & Sukhmani reverberates in their music inspired by legendary Sufi poets—Bulleh Shah, Baba Farid, Kabir, and Shah Hussain. The aim is as simple as it is deep: to make music that soothes the soul across generations.
Sukhmani Malik, trained in Hindustani classical music, and Hari Singh, a versatile producer, vocalist, and audio engineer, have been touring the world as a band since 2009. Their performances on television and radio have created quite a following among diverse audiences. They have been featured on BBC Radio UK, Star World’s 'The Dewarists,' Coke Studio @ MTV, Fox Traveller’s 'Sound Trek,' and the Tehelka Music Project, thus cementing their status in India’s indie music scene.
Hari & Sukhmani's creative collaboration transcends geographical and musical boundaries. They have collaborated with Noori (Pakistan), Arshad Khan (Israeli player), Thu Le (Vietnamese guitarist), Trilok Gurtu (percussionist), Fakhruddin Ghaffari (Iranian percussionist), and Earthstage (Indian jazz band). Their music supremely crosses platforms, genres, audiences, and national borders to propagate messages of unity and cultural harmony.
The group professes to leave behind cultural, religious, and racial boundaries as they create joyful and soulful music for the betterment of the community and the individual. Across Buddhist temples and Hindu sanctuaries, open-air festivals and hotel ballrooms, and everywhere people congregate to share joy and great memories, Hari & Sukhmani represent celebration of life and a shared humanity.
