Kamakshi Rai is a well-rounded Indian singer-songwriter and actress, known for her amazing vocal range and riveting performances. Born on September 4, 1990, in Mumbai, she grew up in a household of music where her mother, Gitanjali Rai, a famous ghazal and devotional singer, influenced her from a very young age. This environment proved to be very rich for Kamakshi, making her feel so much at ease with different genres and languages.
Although one would say that she catapulted into the limelight in 2015 when she was the first runner-up on the show called The Stage, where she performed all types and styles of music-from jazz to Sufi. She sings in different languages, including English, Hindi, Punjabi, and Bengali; she also dubs in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
Kamakshi's entry into Bollywood happened in 2019 with the movie Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, for which the singer recorded "Tere Liye" and "Dreamtime"-the latter of which did manage to make waves, being featured on Apple Music's Bollywood A-List. Besides films, she has voiced several advertising campaigns for clients like Tanishq, Ponds, and Flipkart, besides writing lyrics for TV commercials.
An example of Kamakshi's independent ventures in music is "Thodi Si Dua," which is bilingual Indie Pop and was released on Salim-Sulaiman's Merchant Records in 2021. The song, including Hindi and English lyrics, was written and composed by Kamakshi, while the music video featured her family and friends-it was shot on a terrace in Kolkata. This step was very important for her, as it marked her taking yet another step in her journey as an artist working alone.
Her performances on the theater stage have been no less stellar. She has played the title role in several productions, including Balle Balle and Sing India Sing. Besides performance, Kamakshi has earned her MBA along with a bachelor's degree in computer science, which she then uses to run a small homegrown business consultancy alongside her artistic accomplishments.
