Kaushiki Chakraborty is a celebrated Indian classical vocalist recognized for her expertise in Hindustani classical music as well as her skill to blend tradition and innovation seamlessly. Raised in a musical family, she is the daughter of celebrated vocalist Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, and her childhood was immersed in the depth of traditions of Indian classical music.
Kaushiki began learning music at a young age from her father, and her dedication and ability were soon apparent. She was to become a renowned exponent of the Patiala gharana, famous for its elaborate taans, flowing improvisations, and powerful delivery of voice. Her voice is possessed of an uncommon combination of power and gentleness, with which she navigates complex ragas with sharp precision and feeling.
She came into the limelight after winning the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa singing competition in 1998, which brought her remarkable talent to the notice of a larger audience. She has since then performed all over India and abroad, mesmerizing audiences with her soulful performances of khayal, thumri, dadra, and bhajans.
Besides her classical work, Kaushiki has also worked with modern and fusion music, borrowing from artists of other genres. Her capacity to navigate and experiment within other musical domains and remain connected to the classical base has won her the respect and admiration of far and wide.
She has won many awards, such as the BBC Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, as an appreciation for her contribution to Indian classical music.
