Kattassery Joseph Yesudas, affectionately referred to as K. J. Yesudas, is India's most iconic playback singer, with a heavenly voice and remarkable versatility. Born on January 10, 1940, in Fort Kochi, Kerala, Yesudas started learning classical Carnatic music from an early age under the tutelage of his father, musician Augustine Joseph. This classical music foundation influenced Yesudas's unparalleled talent for merging tradition with modern styles.
With a career that has lasted over six decades, Yesudas has sung over 50,000 songs in various languages, such as Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, and even foreign languages like Russian, Arabic, and Latin. His voice boasts of a distinctive purity, moving effortlessly between devotional hymns, classical pieces, and moving film songs.
Yesudas's arrival was in the 1960s, and soon he was the most sought-after singer in Malayalam cinema. His association with great composers such as Ilaiyaraaja, M. S. Viswanathan, and Raveendran resulted in ageless masterpieces. "Harivarasanam," "Gori Tera Gaon," and "Vaazhve Maayam" are some of the songs that are still close to the hearts of the people from all generations.
His work in music has been rewarded with many awards, including the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer eight times, a record. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan—India's second-highest civilian honor—in 2017.
Apart from his musical accomplishments, Yesudas is also renowned for his humility and spirituality. He believes music to be a gift from the divine and has spent most of his life conveying peace and unity through his craft
