Malini Awasthi was born on 11th February 1967 in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh. She is a noted Indian folk singer who has made a name for herself with the traditional forms such as Thumri, Kajri, and Holi. She sings in several dialects, including Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Bundeli, and Braj, and has helped popularize local folk music nationally and internationally.
Awasthi's musical career started with classical training under the guidance of Padma Vibhushan Vidushi Girija Devi, and thus she is a connoisseur of the 'Chaumukhi gayan' of the Benares Gharana. Her large repertoire and profound knowledge of folk traditions have given her the reputation of being the "Folk Queen of India."
She has performed at many of the country's top festivals and platforms in a career spanning more than three decades, including the Jahan-e-Khusrau festival and the Mahindra Kabira Festival. Her performances are sought after for being as genuine as they are capable of projecting the rich cultural fabric of India's folk heritage.
To acknowledge her invaluable contributions to Indian music, Awasthi was awarded the Padma Shri in 2016. She has also been awarded the Yash Bharti Award by the Uttar Pradesh government in 2006 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2018. Her commitment to the preservation and promotion of folk music has cemented her position as a cultural ambassador.
Apart from live shows, Awasthi has contributed her voice to the soundtracks of several movies, such as "Agent Vinod" and "Dum Laga Ke Haisha," demonstrating her flexibility in terms of musical genres. She has also been a judge on musical reality shows such as "Sur Sangram," extending her influence and mentoring onto new talent within the realm of folk music.
Apart from her music, Awasthi is a writer. She released her debut book called "Chandan Kiwad" at the Jaipur Literature Festival in 2025, showing her strong affinity towards literature and culture. The book received good reviews, adding another facet to her artistic personality.
