Meagan Pandian: India's First Pedal Harpist
Meagan Pandian was born on May 3, 1991, in Mumbai, as Meagan Chrines Alphonso. The first and only pedal harpist of India came in the picture when she was just eight years old with music using the keyboard, then progressed into the Western classical piano when she was fourteen years old. At the age of seven, Meagan felt an urge to play the piano after seeing Amazing Grace performed on television by Greg Buchanan.
Although the harp is not common in India, Meagan was extremely passionate about it. She is also the piano, violin, and viola specialist; thus, it speaks more to her incredible versatility. Other artists with whom she has worked include A.R. Rahman, Pritam, Shankar Mahadevan, Stephen Devassy, and Sameera Koppikar. She performed her first harp shows as part of the Arijit Singh symphony concert series, which opened the floodgates for performances throughout India and abroad.
Meagan has performed with the Bombay Chamber Orchestra, the South Asian Symphony, and the Bohuslav Martin? Philharmonic (Czech Republic). In August 2023, she performed at the Museum of Christian Art in Old Goa and the Independence Day Harp Concert at Alliance Française, Panaji. She has also featured on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2023 with Ranita Banerjee and completed a four-city concert tour for the ESUV launch of Mercedes Benz with cellist Lavine Da Costa.
Besides performing, Meagan is passionate about music education. Lecture-recitals have been held at Christ University, The Bangalore School of Music, The Octavium Music Academy, and The Wandering Artist, Chennai. She is committed to bringing more presence of the harp into the Indian music scene.
From a small girl excited by a televised harp performance to India's first pedal harpist, this journey is a saga of passion and struggle. Meagan Pandian continues to redefine musical boundaries, presenting the harp in a way that excitingly reaches many new audiences and inspires the next generations of musicians.
