Born August 11, 1987, in Mumbai, Mujtaba Aziz Naza is an iconic Indian singer and music composer, widely known for his charismatic voice and hauntingly beautiful renditions of Sufi and Qawwali music. As an illustrious Qawwali maestro himself, Mujtaba is the son of Aziz Naza, and with reverence and innovation, he has carried forward his father's musical legacy.
He started his musical journey at a tender age. At the age of three, Mujtaba won his first-ever competition in singing, and, after his father's demise in 1992, he entered the world of music in earnest, aided by his father's sounds and recordings. He trained under Ustad Afzal Khan of the Rampur Gharana and Ustad Abdul Karim Khan in Indian classical music. By the age of 12, he recorded his first-ever music cassette, setting the foundation for a promising career ahead.
The uniqueness and versatility of Mujtaba over the years has evolved into an enviable repertoire. Also, he has sung many songs in the Bollywood film industry, including songs featured in the films Bajirao Mastani ("Aayat" and "Deewani Mastani") and Padmaavat ("Ek Dil Ek Jaan"). "Chadhta Sooraj Dheere Dheere," his homage to the Qawwali, was featured in the movie Indu Sarkar. Mujtaba has donned many work hats, including that of a music director for the film Sniff.
Being a true pioneer, Mujtaba essentially aims at giving a contemporary twist to the traditional Sufi sound, resulting in compelling fusion works in contrast. One prominent example is a collaboration that interwove flamenco dance with "Chadhta Sooraj Dheere Dheere," a brave cultural crossing that was innovative as well as respectful to its heritage.
