Born Svetha Yallapragada Rao on January 11, 1986, in Claremont, California, Indian-American rapper, singer, and songwriter Raja Kumari rose to fame by fusing classical Indian music with hip-hop. Growing up in a Telugu-speaking household, she was introduced to Indian classical dance forms such as Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Odissi at age seven and gained child prodigy status.
Her artistic path took her to experience hip-hop music during her adolescence, compelling her to blend Eastern heritage with Western music. Taking on the professional name Raja Kumari, she embarked upon a career that syncretically blended these mixed influences.
Kumari's songwriting skills have been a part of music by notable artists like Gwen Stefani, Iggy Azalea, Fifth Harmony, and Fall Out Boy. Specifically, she co-wrote Fall Out Boy's chart-topper "Centuries," which went double-platinum. In 2016, she was awarded the BMI Pop Award for her songwriting success.
As a solo artist, Raja Kumari has put out music that reflects her distinctive style, such as songs like "Mute" and "City Slums," the latter of which is a collaboration with Indian rapper Divine. Her music tends to touch on themes of cultural identity, feminism, and empowerment, which resonate with a worldwide audience.
