Indian artist Roshan Chhabria was born in 1983 in Vadodara, Gujarat. He is known for the intricate sketches and paintings he creates, all of which contain various points related to middle-class life. He completed his Bachelor of Visual Arts (B.V.A.) in 2011 and Master of Visual Arts (M.V.A.) in 2013, with both awards with a gold medal, from Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) in Baroda. Academic brilliance was further enhanced by the Gujarat Lalit Kala Award in 2008 and the Nasreen Mohamedi Scholarship during 2009-2010. Chhabria's artistic journey is deeply influenced by his upbringing in a conservative middle-class Sindhi family. This background informs his exploration of societal expectations, personal aspirations, and the everyday experiences of the Indian middle class. His works often employ a blend of color pencil and watercolor, drawing inspiration from local magazines, billboards, and educational posters. This approach results in pieces rich in dark humor and social parody, reflecting the complexities of middle-class existence.
An outstanding series by Chhabria is "Ideal Boy," described by art historian Ryan Holmberg as a "Dada-inflicted parody of Indian consumerism." It captures the ordinary conundrums of middle-class life and portrays it as an aspirational whirlpool, entrapping the individual in order to keep up with the increasing demands of existence.
Throughout his career, Chhabria has taken part in many exhibitions and residencies. In 2013, he had his solo show at Gallery Maskara in Mumbai and also was a part of group shows DIVER-CITIES II at Latitude 28 in New Delhi and Traditions/Transformation at Geukens & De Vil in Antwerp, Belgium. He has also been associated with several residencies from KHOJ in Delhi (2013) and URU Art Harbour in 2018, curates by Riyas Komu.
Chhabria's work is a deep commentary on the aspirations and challenges of the Indian middle class. His keen observations and unique artistic style provide viewers with a lens to reflect on societal norms and the often-overlooked intricacies of daily life.
