Salim Sulaiman are a pair of Indian composers who have worked in Bollywood music, independent films, and live shows. They are the brothers Salim Merchant and Sulaiman Merchant, who have established a distinct style fusing influences from Indian classical, electronic, and world music.
Salim and Sulaiman, born and brought up in Mumbai, are from a musical background. Their father, Sadruddin Merchant, was a renowned film composer. Salim had formal training in Indian classical music as well as Western piano, while Sulaiman was trained in percussion and rhythm arrangement. The duo paired together to form a successful team, working first on background scores before transitioning into mainstream Bollywood music.
They developed into talented composers with the soundtrack for the movie Bhoot in 2003. Some of the most well-known songs by them are Shukran Allah from Kurbaan, Ainvayi Ainvi from Band Baaja Baaraat, Chak De India from Chak De India, and Mar Jaaniye from Kesari. Their tracks tend to blend rich melodies with contemporary beats, thus making them popular among listeners.
Aside from Bollywood, Salim–Sulaiman have created music for foreign productions, such as FIFA World Cup songs, and worked with foreign artists. They have also ventured into independent music, creating soulful singles and devotional songs. Salim Merchant, whose melodious voice has become recognizable, has performed most of their pieces, providing richness to their compositions.
The team has been nominated for and awarded multiple Filmfare Awards, National Awards, and other honors in recognition of their contributions to the Indian film industry. Through live shows where they integrate electronic beats with live instrumental accompaniments, the two are currently the most booked live acts in the market.
Their careers have seen decades, but Salim–Sulaiman are not letting up and remain the forerunners as top music composers and live performers in India.
