Suresh Ishwar Wadkar is a legendary playback singer from India who is celebrated for his soulful voice and varied singing technique. Born on August 7, 1955, in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, he was trained in classical music by Pandit Jialal Vasant at a young age, learning the nuances of Indian classical traditions. His classical roots gave him the ability to smoothly move into playback singing, where he emerged as one of the most renowned voices in the industry.
He debuted his playback singing in the late 1970s and rose to fame with his songs in both Hindi and Marathi films. His work with all-time great music directors Laxmikant-Pyarelal, R.D. Burman, and Ravindra Jain created eternally popular numbers like "Seene Mein Jalan" (Gaman), "Tum Se Milke" (Parinda), and "Main Hoon Prem Rogi" (Prem Rog). His voice full of emotion and elegance was tailor-made for romantic and devotional music, and he received universal acclaim.
Aside from film music, Suresh Wadkar is also acclaimed for his bhajans and devotional songs, infusing devotion into song through his genuine performances. He has made monumental contributions to the music of Maharashtra as well, with numerous famous songs that go on to appeal to listeners in generations to come.
Apart from his vocal career, Wadkar is an avid music teacher. He established the Ajivasan Music Academy in Mumbai, where he guides young singers and maintains the legacy of Indian classical music. His devotion to finding talent has earned him a prized place among the music teaching world.
